• While we were enjoying the excellent hospitality at the Tour de France Grand Départ in Mont St.-Michel, we couldn’t help wondering what star photographer Brian Hodes was doing with that enormous ring flash. • Many of us only know the Tour of Britain as the super-slick, week-long cycling extravaganza it is today (thanks to modern race organisers SweetSpot). • The first Red Hook Crit was held in 2008 in Brooklyn – famously, in the words of the organisers, “with no sponsors, prizes, promotion or permits”. Now slightly more legitimate, this year it made its way to London’s Greenwich Peninsula for the second time. Paul Maunder and photographer Chris Auld were on hand to cover the coolest kids in cycling for our photo-feature Hooked.
• Tom Owen spent his twenty-fifth birthday riding a mountain bike around the vast and mystical Angkor Wat, Cambodia. In his Postcard he explains why, once again, a bicycle is the exotic explorer’s greatest friend.

• Two-time world champion, Olympian, winner of 23 six-day races, one-time highly controversial President of the British Cycling Federation and founder of both the modern Tour of Britain and the London Six Day, Tony Doyle MBE may be the greatest (and most important) British cyclist you’ve never heard of. • The small Cantabrian town of Torrelavega is home to such cycling luminaries as Vicente Trueba (the first ever King of the Mountains at the Tour de France) Manuel Saiz and Óscar Freire.
