Luke Roberts has retired from professional racing.
I knew that sentence would be written one day and part of me wished it would never come.
Luke’s last race was the recent Velothon Berlin. On the team website, Luke said:
“The time has come for me to hang up the wheels, well one set at least, the Garmin Velothon Berlin on Sunday will be the last professional road race of my career. I will be leaving the peloton and moving into the comfort of the team car as I take up a new role with Team Stoelting as Sports Director. However I will keep one set of wheels rolling, continuing to compete at an Elite level on the Track.”
So Luke will now transition within Team Stölting from rider to Sports Director. It is comforting knowing that he will still remain with the team to guide the young charges.
Luke started racing at age 13 and he ends his career at 37 with 1 Olympic Gold in 2004 in the Team Pursuit, 2 Commonwealth Games Gold in 1998 and 2002 in the same event and a Silver medal in 1998 Commonwealth Games Individual Pursuit. He started pro racing with Comnet Senges (2002-2004), Team CSC (2005-2007), Team Kuota (2008-2009), Team Milram (2010), Team Saxo Bank-SunGard (2011-2012) and finally with the German outfit, Team Stölting (2013-2014).
There also multiple World and National Track titles to add to Luke’s palmares. The National Championships started in Juniors with several titles for the Individual Pursuit, Team Pursuit, Sprint, Points and Elimination Races. There are four World Track Championships, two in Juniors and two in Senior ranks and multiple 6-Day track racing honours.
Hopefully soon, we will catch up with Luke at Team Stölting for a feature in Conquista.
