Stage 9 of the Tour took place in Spain and Principality of Andorra. The 184.5KM stage featured five major climbs and a mountain top finish at Andorre Arcalis - a 10.1KM climb with an average gradient of 7.2%.
Patrick made is safely home in 103rd position, in a small group with 3 team mates, 31:10 behind the stage winner. He tried to be active in the breakaway today, in a stage start that went vertical from the gun. But with Contador and Valverde splitting the group and Team Sky going fullgas Patrick decided to drop back to the bunch and save his legs for another day.
The stage was really tough once again. Patrick used a compact chainset 53/36 front - 28/11 rear, in contrast to the 54 front chainring his normally prefers for flatter stages. As a climber, Koni coped better than most with the challenge of today, but he's still happy for tomorrow's rest day.
Team mate Sam Bennett seems to be feeling better following his crash on day one - he wheelied up the Tourmalet yesterday! Sam came home in the gruppetto again today. He now lies 193rd on GC - and due to three more abandons, is still the Tour's Lantern Rouge.
